On the TI-68k series, TI added some hardware to perform RAM execution protection. The goal was not to protect against crashes (because the RAM execution protection does crash the calculator when it fires), but to set up artificial limitations on what users can do with the calculator...
HW2Patch and HW3Patch patch the OS directly in Flash memory, in order to disable this silly restriction. They redefine the bits performing the initial setup of the RAM execution protection from "nearly everything forbidden" to "everything allowed". And HW3Patch also performs another fix.
HW3Patch is among the ~15 patches performed by tiosmod+amspatch, but this one is harder to use than HW3Patch, for non-technical (read: legal) reasons.
