Tax Brackets (from Table 12.8): $0$10,000: 0% (no tax) $10,001$25,000: 9% tax $25,001$55,000: 22% tax $55,001$115,000: 40% tax $115,001 and above: 55% tax 1a. Income = $6,500 Entire income is in the first bracket ($0$10,000), where the tax rate is 0%. Income tax = $0 1b. Income = $15,700 The first $10,000 is taxed at 0%: $0 tax. The remaining income ($15,700 - $10,000 = $5,700) is taxed at 9%. 5,700×0.09=513 Income tax = $513 1c. Income = $31,000 The first $10,000 is taxed at 0%: $0 tax. The next portion ($15,000, i.e., from $10,001 to $25,000) is taxed at 9%. 15,000×0.09=1,350 The remaining income ($6,000, i.e., from $25,001 to $31,000) is taxed at 22%. 6,000×0.22=1,320 Total income tax = $1,350 + $1,320 = $2,670 1d. Income = $48,000 The first $10,000 is taxed at 0%: $0 tax. The next portion ($15,000, i.e., from $10,001 to $25,000) is taxed at 9%. 15,000×0.09=1,350 The next portion ($23,000, i.e., from $25,001 to $48,000) is taxed at 22%. 23,000×0.22=5,060 Total income tax = $1,350 + $5,060 = $6,410 1e. Income = $120,000 The first $10,000 is taxed at 0%: $0 tax. The next portion ($15,000, i.e., from $10,001 to $25,000) is taxed at 9%. 15,000×0.09=1,350 The next portion ($30,000, i.e., from $25,001 to $55,000) is taxed at 22%. 30,000×0.22=6,600 The next portion ($60,000, i.e., from $55,001 to $115,000) is taxed at 40%. 60,000×0.40=24,000 The remaining portion ($5,000, i.e., from $115,001 to $120,000) is taxed at 55%. 5,000×0.55=2,750 Total income tax = $1,350 + $6,600 + $24,000 + $2,750 = $34,700 2. Average and Marginal Tax Rates Now, we calculate the average income tax rate and marginal tax rate. 2a. Average Income Tax Rate This is the total income tax paid as a percentage of total income $6,500: 0/6,500=0% $15,700: 513/15,700×100=3.27% $31,000: 2,6703/1,000×100=8.61% $48,000: 6,410/48,000×100=13.35% $120,000: 34,700/120,000×100=28.92% 2b. What happens as income increases? The average tax rate increases as income increases because this is a progressive tax system. Higher portions of income are taxed at higher rates. 3. Indirect Tax for a Family with $48,000 Income For this part, the family spends 85% of its disposable income (after-tax income) on goods and services. Additionally, they pay a 17% Value Added Tax (VAT) on all their spending. 3a. Calculate the amount of indirect tax paid Disposable income = Total income - income tax = $48,000 - $6,410 = $41,590. They spend 85% of this disposable income: 41,590×0.85=35,351.50 The VAT rate is 17%. So, the indirect tax they pay is: 35,351.50×0.17=5,136.54 Indirect tax paid = $5,136.54 3b. Calculate the average indirect tax rate This is the indirect tax as a percentage of total income. 5,136.54/48,000×100=10.70% 3c. Total average tax rate (Direct + Indirect) We add the average direct tax rate (from 2a) and the average indirect tax rate (from 3b). Average direct tax rate = 13.35% Average indirect tax rate = 10.70% 13.35%+10.70%=24.05% So, the total average tax rate for this family is 24.05%. Key Takeaways: Progressive tax system: Income is divided into segments (tax brackets), and each segment is taxed at a different rate. Marginal tax rate: The rate at which the last dollar of income is taxed. Average tax rate: The total tax paid as a percentage of total income. Direct tax: The tax you pay on your income. Indirect tax: Tax paid on goods and services (e.g., VAT), calculated based on spending. Made with nCreator - tiplanet.org
