Jahn-Teller distortions: degenerate orbitals cannot be unequally occupied. Causes either stretching or compression of the molecule. Jahn-Teller distortions occur in non-linear molecules with degenerate electronic states, such as: Octahedral complexes with d9, low-spin d7, or high-spin d4 complexes (e.g., orbitals both unequally degenerate). Elongation: dx^2-y^2 increases energy (bonding interaction increases w/ AB* ligands). dz^2 decreases energy as it is less destabalized, and less bonding interaction with antibonding ligand orbitals. For compression of axials, dz^2 increases while dx^2-y^2 decreases (bonding interaction decreases). Tetrahedral complexes with d3, d8, or high-spin d6 electron configurations EX: Jagn-Teller distortion is expected if Eg* orbitals are unequally occupied. There is no J-T distortion when all orbitals are equally occupied. Made with nCreator - tiplanet.org
